Facebook Messenger To Get Payments Feature Eventually

Facebook released its Q2 earnings report on Wednesday. It was an impressive quarter, which led to the company’s stock opening at an all-time high.

As usual, the company dropped the facebookobligatory stats, and COO Sheryl Sandberg announced that the company has 1.5 million active advertisers.

The item from the earnings call that’s generating the most discussion on Thursday is what

Facebook

CEO Mark Zuckerberg had to say about payments and its Messenger service – basically that you will be able to make payments with Messenger eventually.

Here’s what he said during the Q&A portion of the call (via Business Insider)

Messenger will have — over time there will be some overlap between that and payments. But I guess what I’m just trying to say is two things. One is, the payments piece will be a part of what will help drive the overall success and help people share with each other and interact with businesses. But we’re really focused on the interactions overall, rather than the mechanism and David shares that view.

And the second thing is just that there’s so much ground work that we need to do in order to make it so that people are communicating with businesses and public figures and entities in these other apps that we’re building, which is part of the business ecosystem. And I really can’t underscore that enough that we have a lot of work to do and we could take the cheap and easy approach and just try to put ads in or do payments and make some money in the short term. But we’re not going to do that. So to the extent that any of your models or anything reflects that we might be doing that, I would strongly encourage you here to adjust that, because we’re not going to and we’re going to take time to do this in the way that we think that’s going to be right over multiple years.

Facebook has been doing a lot in the messaging realm lately from the pending WhatsApp acquisition to that strange Slingshot app to new a potential new “Instagram Bolt” app. The company has been tinkering with Payments offerings for years, so it’s hardly a shock that Facebook would consider putting both concepts together (really, it makes a lot more sense than Slingshot). They did, after all, hire PayPal’s David Marcus to run the messaging unit.

On the earnings call, Zuckerberg said 12 billion messages are sent per day on Facebook.

Facebook to open its very first Community Hub space on the continent, in addition to a series of long-term impact training programmes for 50,000 Nigerians

LAGOS, Nigeria, November 22, 2017/ — Today, Facebook (www.Facebook.com) announced a new nationwide initiative in Nigeria (http://APO.af/2y13ue) to further cement its commitment and investment in the country, and across the continent. Incorporating a series of high profile partnerships, training programmes and a physical space that will serve as a center for learning and skills development, this set of initiatives is aimed at helping to develop and nurture communities, including small businesses, the tech and start-up ecosystem, youths and creatives.

“In Nigeria, more than 22 million people use Facebook every month and 87% of SMEs say that when they hire, digital skills are more important than where an applicant went to school. This demonstrates that the power of digital skills to aid economic growth and development has never been more important”, commented Ebele Okobi, Facebook Public Policy Director, Africa. “At Facebook, our mission is clear: To give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Our investments and commitments announced in Lagos today further reflect our intent to partner with Nigeria’s policy makers and its vibrant tech and entrepreneurial eco-system to create economic opportunity and independence in Nigeria and across Africa.’’

NG_HUB from Facebook

In partnership with CC Hub, Facebook will be opening the doors to its first community Hub space in the heart of Lagos, scheduled to open early next year. ‘NG_HUB from Facebook’ will be a multi-faceted creative space, which will connect and bring together developers, start-ups and the wider community to collaborate, learn and exchange ideas. The NG_HUB will also host a start-up incubator programme, as well as bespoke trainings, guest speakers and a dedicated event space, all aimed at attracting the best talent and driving innovation in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

Additionally, across Nigeria, Facebook will be supporting a number of existing tech Hubs to serve the communities outside Lagos. The hubs will function as learning centres for local communities, providing multiple opportunities for training and access.

Commenting on the announcement of NG_HUB in partnership with CC Hub, and Facebook’s further support of local hubs across Nigeria, Emeka Afigbo, Head of Platform Partnerships, Middle East & Africa said “Nigeria is producing a new generation of exciting start-ups that have incredible potential. We understand the important role Facebook plays here in Nigeria with developers and start-ups and are invested in helping these communities build for the next billion. One of our key passions at Facebook is nurturing and helping to develop the tech and start-up community, and I’m excited to announce our partnership with the Nigerian tech hub ecosystem especially the NG_HUB space, here in Lagos.”

Facebook Nigeria Skills Programmes

Facebook is committed to working with Nigerian small businesses, tech entrepreneurs and the next generation of leaders to better understand and utilise the power of digital tools for economic growth. Launching a series of learning-based programmes facilitated by local training partners, these have been designed to provide skills that lead to employment and to support the growth of small businesses. The goal is to train and support over 50,000 students, small businesses and creative entrepreneurs across the country through a series of scaled digital skills trainings, as well as long-term impact programmes. The training programmes will include:

  • Aspiring Entrepreneurs: Digital (in partnership with the Fate Foundation) – a four-week intensive programme for entrepreneurs across Nigeria. This will be offered throughout the year in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Ibadan, Kaduna and Enugu
  • Jobs for Youth: Coding for Employment – a training programme to develop Nigeria’s next generation of coders – designed to upskill developers and prepare them for employment
  • Boost your Business – designed for small, medium sized businesses owners, teaching the fundamentals of digital marketing for business growth, with the goal to help business owners better understand their brand, audience and how to best reach and service them online
  • Creative Entrepreneurship Training – specialised training designed specifically for creatives, including photographers, filmmakers, musicians, artists, bloggers and other creative content creators
  • Online Safety + Digital Literacy Training in Schools and Universities – featuring a series of online safety and digital literacy courses for secondary school and university students

Ahead of the programme launch, Facebook undertook a detailed ‘Economic Impact Study’ (http://APO.af/rzdya4) to further understand how communities like small businesses and consumers in Nigeria use the platform, and the effectiveness of social media as a growth tool. Nearly 1 in 2 small businesses on Facebook say they built their business on the platform, and 62% stated they have been able to use Facebook to help find employees for their business, whilst over half (58%) of small businesses on the platform say they have been able to hire more employees’ due to growth since joining Facebook.

360 Blockchain Inc. Announces Execution of Letter of Intent for Proposed Acquisition of Pressland

Segun Balogun

Published

Vancouver, BC — (SBWIRE) — 11/22/2017 — 360 Blockchain Inc. (“360” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce it has executed a letter of intent to acquire 70% of the media directory and website Pressland (http://press.land) from Chaotic Neutral LLC, which letter of intent is subject to closing conditions usual to transactions of this type, including exchange approval. Under the direction of 360’s strategic advisor, Jeff Koyen, Pressland will become a blockchain-powered platform dedicated to debunking fake news.

“Before ‘fake news’ was a household term, Pressland was already in the business of media transparency,” said George Tsafalas, 360’s President. “Today, thanks to the innovative power of blockchain technology and utilizing 360’s expertise and resources we have the unique opportunity to expand Pressland’s mission to debunking fake news and exposing unreliable players in the media.”

Launched in 2015 as “Yelp for Media,” Pressland offers a crowd-sourced directory of nearly 20,000 media outlets and professionals. Starting in 2018, Pressland will distribute blockchain-powered tools to the public that expose biased and unreliable media outlets and stories.

“Pressland is already a fundamentally good idea that’s been popular with media professionals,” said Jeff Koyen. “But now that blockchain technology is more accessible and market-proven, it’s a very exciting time to re-envision Pressland as a general-interest, public platform operating on trust and transparency.”

Pressland is fully held by Chaotic Neutral LLC, a Brooklyn-based incubator of media projects founded by Jeff Koyen. With capital from 360 Blockchain Inc., Pressland will relaunch as a blockchain-based media-transparency platform. Plans for an initial coin offering (“ICO”) (or, cryptocurrency token offering) are being discussed.

While no definitive documentation has yet been signed by the parties, and there is no certainty that such documentation will be signed, certain terms of the proposed acquisition include:

· 360 would acquire 70% of Pressland from Chaotic Neutral LLC, with the option to purchase the remaining 30% within one year’s time.

· Purchase price to be paid by 360 to Chaotic Neutral LLC equals two tranches of 1,000,000 shares of 360 (subject to receipt of stock exchange approval), with the first 1,000,000 shares paid on closing, and the second upon the exercise of the option to purchase the final 30%.

· Additionally, USD $250,000 in working capital to be provided by 360 to Chaotic Neutral LLC in two tranches, with USD $125,000 given upon closing, and the balance in 4 months from closing.

· Using this capital, Pressland will develop blockchain technologies for the Company, enabling the monetization of its R&D efforts.

· Mr. Jeff Koyen, 360’s strategic advisor and an integral part of the 360 leadership team, will lead Pressland’s advancement.

· Working with the appropriate regulatory bodies, 360 may decide to stage an ICO to further develop Pressland.

This proposed investment will be the third of several to empower blockchain technologies with capital and experience to create exponential value.
